Exposure to P. aeruginosa, Y. enterocolitica and Campylobacter

Characteristics: All three bacteria are human pathogens that are self-limiting in healthy individuals.

Incubation Period: Varies; usually 3 - 7 days or 24-72 hours for eye splash.

Symptoms: Acute watery diarrhea, acute mesenteric lymphadenitis mimicking appendicitis, fever, headache, anorexia, vomiting, cutaneous ulceration, osteomyelitis and septicemia; gastroenterocolitis syndrome.

What is a potential exposure? Ingestion, needlestick or cut with contaminated sharp object, splash to the eye, contact with broken skin.

Post-Exposure Treatment:

If symptoms appear in laboratory personnel with no known incidence of exposure: Seek medical attention and inform the health care provider of the microorganisms used in the workplace.

Prevention: Biosafety level 2 practices, containment equipment, and facilities; wear lab coat and gloves; frequent handwashing is essential. Never eat in the lab. Caution should be used with sharps.

Reporting: Make note of the date and time of the incident and any relevant details. Inform principal investigator and Biosafety Officer immediately. Fill out a First Report of Injury Form.
