2005-2006 Laboratory Audits

Inspector

The Department of Environmental Safety (DES) has initiated a substantial laboratory auditing initiative to be conducted during the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 semesters. Over 300 laboratories will be evaluated by DES staff. Representative laboratories will be selected from all colleges that have teaching or research laboratory facilities where hazardous materials or processes are located.

The Laboratory Audit Program was initiated to: (1) identify the status of compliance with major safety and environmental programs; (2) assist laboratories in eliminating unsafe conditions, understanding requirements and achieving compliance; (3) assess the effectiveness of environmental health & safety program outreach to lab facilities/personnel; and (4) develop a trend analysis to understand the University's overall success in creating a safe environment in compliance with regulations, standards and codes.

Laboratory facilities often contain dangerous chemical, biological and radiological materials. Lab Managers are ultimately responsible for ensuring work is conducted in a safe and responsible manner. We encourage Principal Investigators and Lab Supervisors to review the audit form (link to explanations of deficiencies with solutions for correction).

A Question & Answer resource is available with additional information about the audit program. Any questions concerning environmental, health & safety regulations and appropriate procedures may be directed to safety@umd.edu or by calling (301) 405-3960.
