"Right-To-Know" is a generic term for laws which are effective across the United States. These laws establish basic legal rights of employees to be informed about hazardous materials on the job. The Maryland State regulation is called "Access to Information about Hazardous and Toxic Substances Act." The Federal regulation is called "Hazard Communication." Copies of both regulations are available at the Department of Environmental Safety (DES).
DES coordinates implementation of the Hazard Communication program on campus. The written Hazard Communication program details how the University of Maryland will comply with the requirements of both the Maryland State and federal Hazard Communication regulations. A copy of the written Hazard Communication program has been supplied to each department at the University of Maryland. To review a copy of the written program, contact your departmental office, your supervisor, or DES. At the University of Maryland, all employees will be provided with information or training to become familiar with the campus Hazard Communication program and, if applicable, the nature of the hazardous chemicals and practices which exist in their workplace(s). There are several sources for hazardous information which are explained in this brochure. DES is available to answer any questions or address concerns related to hazards in your workplace. |
