	The Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for: managing the University's compliance with the State Fire Prevention Code and other applicable fire safety laws and standards; providing fire safety education and training; investigating all fires that occur on University property; and performing plan review and construction inspections. Life safety is the primary objective of the fire safety program. DES Fire Marshals are delegated fire prevention and investigation authority by the Maryland State Fire Marshal. Programs include: fire exit drills; fire safety education for students, faculty, and staff; fire inspections of campus buildings and public assembly events, emergency procedure planning and training, fire data analysis, code consultation, general fire safety issue consultation, coordination and issuance of required permits, fire investigations (investigations involving crimes are coordinated with UMPD). Construction plan review and associated inspection services are provided by the Code Services unit of the Fire Marshal's Office. Life safety systems (fire alarms, sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and generators) are serviced by Facilities Management Operations and Maintenance. Fire suppression (firefighting) and emergency medical services are provided by the Prince George's County Fire & EMS Department (PGFD). PGFD Station 12 is a University building which houses the College Park Volunteer Fire Department (CPVFD). DES Fire Marshals are in attendance at all large scale public assembly events and work closely with event staff.

Copies are available from the Department of Environmental Safety main office in the Chesapeake Building, Department of Resident Life North Campus Office in LaPlata Hall, Resident Life South Campus Office in Calvert Hall, and the Campus Programs Office in the Stamp Student Union. The Get Out and Stay Alive video and its accompanying training kit are designed to educate college students about the importance of day-to-day fire safety and prevention measures in residence halls and off-campus housing. DES was very involved in the production of Get Out and Stay Alive. Portions of the video were made on the University of Maryland campus.
