Volume 3.4         For the University of Maryland Campus       November 2000

Old Faces, New Faces & the Holidays

Tom Long

As some of you may have noticed on your visits to the Radiation Safety Office that Mr. Thomas Long has retired from the Radiation Safety Officer position with the Department of Environmental Safety (DES). Tom arrived on campus in 1986 and proceeded to rewrite the program and build it into finely tuned machine. After 14 years Tom decided to retire and enjoy the good times without having to fill out a time sheet. Tom and his wife Jo are spending time traveling to various places in the USA and frequently weekend on the Bay in Ocean City. His staff and fellow DES members will miss Tom's friendship, guidance and outstanding performance as the RSO.

The new Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for the University of Maryland is Steve Hand. Steve has been with the University since 1985 as a Health Physicist and has been fortunate to be under the tutelage and guidance of Tom Long for the past 14 years. We wish him the best of luck in maintaining the excellent program that Tom has built during his tenure.

Sometime in the spring a new face will join the staff of the Radiation Safety Office. Until then Steve Hand and Bryan Zidek will staff the Radiation Safety Office for the Department of Environmental Safety.

Now that the fall semester is well under way the holiday seasons will be upon us before we know it. Thanksgiving and Christmas along with the semester break combine for almost 30 days in which some of you will not be on campus.

In these cases it is particularly important to pay attention to the radiation safety requirements on campus. Make sure that your sources and waste are secured, swipe tests are conducted and the results recorded in the logbook, dosimeters returned after Christmas, and notify our office of changes in personnel. Even though there will be less individuals roaming the campus during these times you still need to lock up your lab if you do not have it in under direct surveillance. Our staff will be on call during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks in case of emergencies. If you have any concerns or questions contact our office at (301) 314-8336 or email the RSO.
