Volume 3.2 For the University of Maryland Campus May 2000
The Radiation Safety Office is now offering training on our web site at Safety Office is now offering training on our web site at http://www.des.umd.edu.
There are two programs available at this site, Radioactive Material Training and X-ray Training. Just scroll down the page to Web Based Training and select the appropriate course.
After completion of the course participants need to contact the Radiation Safety Office for follow up "hands-on" training. This is the practical part, which obviously cannot be handled, in a virtual setting. The Web based training is in accordance with the university policies for strategic planning, implementing the use of technology as part of the university system. The training programs serve two immediate purposes; one, it is now more convenient for researchers, new graduate students, and other personnel employed in the use of radioactive material or radiation producing devices to receive training, and two, if frees up time for our staff to devote to upgrading the training and addressing other key issues at work.
It is imperative however that all personnel receive "hands-on" training. There is no substitute for getting the feel of handling a few sources, using a survey meter, and seeing first hand the responses to detectors from a variety of radioactive sources. The participants will also view videotapes on the safe use of radioactive materials and x-rays devices. Meeting face to face accords the opportunity for questions, and inquiries about the type of work, research, areas of use and follow up questions from the Web training program. Additionally, completion of a take home exam is required to complete the training as well as receipt of training manuals and the Radiation Safety Manual. These materials are handed out in the "hands-on" session.
If you have any questions or comments about the training, you may complete the form at the end of the Web training or you may email me. Please feel free to stop by our office in room 2124 Chemical & Nuclear Engineering to meet the staff face to face and discuss any issues involving radiation safety.
