Get Out and Stay Alive

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has produced an award-winning fire safety video, Get Out and Stay Alive. The Get Out and Stay Alive program is designed to educate college students about the importance of day-to-day fire safety and prevention measures in residence halls and off-campus housing. The program consists of a video and focuses on three main topics: getting out, prevention, and protection.

This video may also be borrowed by anyone wishing to view it or make a fire safety presentation. Copies are available from the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk main office in the Seneca Building, Department of Resident Life North Campus Office in LaPlata Hall, Resident Life South Campus Office in Calvert Hall, and the Campus Programs Office in the Stamp Student Union.

ESSR was very involved in the production of Get Out and Stay Alive. Portions of the video were made on the University of Maryland campus.

New Video Promotes Fire Safety on College Campuses

Washington - The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, today announced the availability of a new, award-winning fire safety video, Get Out and Stay Alive. The video and its accompanying training kit are designed to educate college students about the importance of day-to-day fire safety and prevention measures in residence halls and off-campus housing.

"The USFA is expanding the audience for our fire safety message to specifically include college students," said USFA Administrator Carrye B. Brown. "This video emphasizes that when faced with a fire situation they must realize that escape is the first priority for personal survival."

Get Out and Stay Alive was produced under a USFA cooperative agreement by the Eau Claire Fire Department, Eau Claire, Wisc. The video, produced by TeleVideo Productions, has already won two awards. The Greater Wisconsin Chapter of the International Television Association (ITVA) honored the production with both the Cameo Fest Gold Award and the National ITVA Golden Reel Award.

USFA is distributing the training kit, including the video, brochure, facilitator's guide, and evaluation forms to U.S. colleges and universities. In cooperation through state fire marshals' offices, Get Out and Stay Alive will also be made available to fire departments nationwide.
