Electric micromobility vehicles in campus buildings

In the first half of March, UMD experienced two fires inside campus buildings caused by electric micromobility vehicles. As stated in a Fall 2023 communication to campus and in other communications, electric micromobility vehicles (e-scooters, e-skateboards, electric bicycles, e-hoverboards) are not allowed inside campus buildings. The lithium-ion batteries in micromobility vehicles can catch fire without warning, producing intense projectile-emitting fires that are difficult to extinguish.

The Fire Marshal has reviewed each case and determined that only fortunate timing prevented more serious consequences. Despite repeated reminders and warnings, some members of the community continue to bring their devices indoors. The university must take further action to mitigate this hazard.

Electric micromobility vehicles found in campus buildings are subject to immediate fine and impoundment. Vehicle owners will receive a fine of up to $70 ($35 impound fee, $35 penalty) and students will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct (OSC). Impounded devices may be claimed at the DOTS offices. Repeat offenders may be subject to increased fines and further action by OSC.

How you can help:

  • If you see a vehicle inside a campus building, complete this online form. Action will be taken based on the information provided.
  • If you own an electric micromobility device, do not bring it inside campus buildings and review the National Fire Protection Association Safety Tips.
  • If you see a vehicle on fire, do not try to put out the fire. Call 911 immediately. Leave the area and warn others to stay away.

The staff and leaders of Transportation Services, Student Affairs, Public Safety and the Office of the Fire Marshal are working together to help keep our community safe. We appreciate your support and cooperation as we address this important issue.

Sincerely,
